What Is the Indian e-Visa?

The Indian e-Visa is an official document that permits entry into India and is available online without visiting an embassy. Once approved, the visa is sent to your registered email and is valid for entry through designated airports or seaports.

The Government of India currently offers the following types of e-Visas:

1) e-Tourist Visa – For leisure, sightseeing, and visiting friends/family

2) e-Business Visa – For attending business meetings, trade fairs, etc.

3) e-Medical Visa – For short-term medical treatment in India

4) e-Medical Attendant Visa – For accompanying someone on a medical visa

5) e-Conference Visa – For attending seminars or government-hosted events

As per the Ministry of Home Affairs (India), the following are the important guidelines:

• Application must be submitted at least 4 days prior to travel and not more than 120 days in advance.

• Passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of arrival in India.

• Travelers must carry a copy of the e-Visa approval (ETA) during travel.

• The e-Visa is non-extendable and non-convertible.

• Maximum duration of stay is 60 to 90 days, depending on visa type.

• You may enter only through 28 designated airports or 5 seaports:

  • Airports: Trivandrum, Cochin, Calicut, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, etc.

  • Seaports: Kochi, Goa, Mangalore, Chennai, Mumbai

• No restricted/protected areas allowed under e-Visa without additional clearance.

• Biometric details will be collected at immigration on arrival.
