Geography & History

Originally part of Travancore’s teak forests, Thekkady was the royal hunting grounds of the Maharajas.  Additionally, the British built the Mullaperiyar Dam in 1895, creating Periyar Lake. Consequently, the region transformed and eventually became a protected sanctuary in 1950 and a Tiger Reserve in 1978
